Rugby tour to Sharjah

Every year the TISA Titan’s Rugby Football Club do a trip to Sharjah to join in a rugby tournament there. This year Gregor was playing for the under 10s, he had to play up a age-range as there weren’t enough to have an under 9s (the club is quite small and only even aged teams were entered). We also don’t play matches during the term, as we have no one to play against, so it was Gregor’s first competitive rugby – he has played some touch rugby before but this is the real deal, full contact.

Now Gregor is not the biggest 8 year old ever and there were a lot of players that were a lot bigger than him (there was 1 player that was bigger than Richard) and the teams were all a lot more experienced as well, regularly playing matches, so the score wasn’t in our favour – we lost all four matches! But the team played really well and you could see the improvement over the day, we scored 2 tries! Lots of smiles as well, they all really enjoyed themselves, you can’t ask for more than that.

Team Photo. The club took these early in the day then someone rushed off to get them all printed and presented all the players with a photo in the evening. Very impressed.

My camera was running out of batteries so I don’t have any pictures of the actual matches, besides I was too busy cheering from the sidelines to take photos!

After the rugby tournament we all got onto the coaches and headed off to desert camp. This was the highlight of the weekend for Katrine and Gregor. We all went on a very short camel ride, it is a very strange movement when the camel stands up/gets down but the actual ride is smoother than I expected – Gregor did go on the camel but my camera was out of battery then so no photo.

After the camel ride we got to go in a Land Cruiser ride over the sand dunes. The kids in the back all chanting “faster, fasters, more bumps!” I thought we were going quite fast enough and there were certainly enough bumps. One of the cars in our group got grounded coming over the top of the dune and had to be towed out, which our driver thought was very funny.

It is a long way to go for 4 games of rugby but worth it, it was a very good long weekend.
