Got my ingredients – first attempt at making my moisturiser

A couple of weekend ago I went to a friends house and had an introduction to making my own soaps and moisturisers.  My order has arrived so it was my time to pay around and make something. I decided to make a skin healing solid bar, inside deodorant tubes – so easy to apply.

Recipe that I used:

  • 100ml olive oil (or another liquid oil like sweet almond, grape – I just have olive oil handy)
  • 50ml calendula petals
  • 50ml lavender petals
  • 50ml coconut oil (you can use any room temperature solid oil – cocoa butter, Shea butter…
  • 50ml beeswax

First I had to make an infusion with the calendula and lavender. I chopped the petals up and then mixed with the oil and heated it gently. I read online you can use direct heat but have to be really careful to not fry the flowers, so I thought I would use a double boiler.

I then heated this for about four hours to let the oil absorb the goodness from the petals. I chose calendula and lavender as they are both good for healing skin, grazes, cuts and burn and particularly good for dry skin. This winter myself and the kids have been suffering (lack of humidity in the air!) so I’m hoping this cream will help.

After the fours hours of heating I let the oil cool and strained the petals out. I got out only 50ml of oil, half what I put in.

IMG_1125It melted very quickly so then it was time to pour into the containers. Which was messy and fun – I think I need to buy a funnel!

Then just leave to cool! That is is, very simple and quick to do.

This amount made up two 30ml deodorant tubes and four lip blame pots, which is a perfect amount to get me started. The sticks are very easy for the kids to use themselves, without making a mess and the little tubs can slip inside my handbag for moisturising when out and about!
